Chiefs Win Super Bowl 57: Mahomes Wins the MVP

By: Garret Kryzanowski

Well I was wrong, I picked against Patrick Mahomes.

Super Bowl 57 was an all time classic as are all Super Bowls played in Arizona. In a tight back and forth game it was Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs coming out victorious 38-35 over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Super Bowl 57 was a back and forth up and down affair that had everything you could hope for in the biggest event on the sporting calendar. From an AJ Brown 45 yard touchdown catch to the Chiefs defence scoring on a 36 yard fumble return for a touchdown, fans were not disappointed, unless they bleed Eagles green.

The first quarter saw the Eagles do what they've done more than any other team in the NFl this season, score on the opening drive of the game. The Chiefs responded with an 18 yard Travis Kelce touchdown catch on an out and up route, keeping the fans entertained. The first play of the second quarter was the before mentioned 45 yard AJ Brown touchdown catch giving the Eagles the lead once again. The Chiefs only score in the second quarter came on the Chiefs fumble recovery touchdown, seemingly taking all momentum from the Eagles, or so they thought. Jalen Hurts answered every hurdle that was sent his way in this game, leading the Eagles on two more scoring drives in the second quarter, giving the Eagles a 24-14 lead at halftime.

The second half however, belonged to the Kansa City Chiefs and the league MVP, Patrick Mahomes. They started the scoring on the first drive of the second half marching down the field, scoring on a Pacheco one yard touchdown run. This was just the beginning for the Chiefs on offence but could there defence slow down Hurts and the Eagles offence? Yes, as a matter of fact, that is exactly what they did.

Well Mahomes and the Chiefs were finding their stride the Eagles were struggling to get anything going in the third having to settle for a Jake Elliott field goal in the third quarter. Even though the Eagles led 27-21 after three quarters, anyone watching could tell that Mahomes wasn't finished.

Mahomes went off in the fourth quarter throwing two touchdown passes. The first was a five yard touchdown pass to Kadarius Toney on a whip route. The second, a four yard touchdown pass to Skyy Moore on another whip route. The Eagles defence had no answer for Mahomes and the Chiefs, but thankfully Jalen Hurts did. With his team down 35-27 and only 9:22 left in the fourth quarter Hurts put the team on his back and led the Eagles on a eight play 75 yard scoring drive, capping the drive off by calling his own number for a two yard rushing touchdown. Still needing to convert a two point conversion, Hurts once again called his own number converting on a two point conversion with a QB power to the left side of the line, powering through to tie the game 35-35.

However, 5:15 is a lot of time for any quarterback, but is a lifetime for the two time league MVP Patrick Mahomes and he used up as much of the clock as he could. Leading the Chiefs on a 13 play, 69 yard drive, ending the drive and eventually the game with a 27 yard field from Harrison Butker. With eight seconds left, the Eagles were able to give themselves a chance on a last second Hail Mary throw from Hurts. The throw landed 20 yards short of the endzone. The final score; Kansas City Chiefs 38, Philadelphia Eagles 35. What a game.

This truly was a game for the ages and I will once again admit I was wrong, you really should NEVER bet against Patrick Mahomes no matter how hurt he is or what the odds are. He finished the game going 21 for 27 for 182 yards passing and three touchdown passes. But perhaps the most impressive part of Mahomes Super Bowl MVP performance was the 44 yards rushing he had on just six carries, all on a hurt ankle. Truly remarkable to watch. After only five years as a starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes now has two league MVP's, two Super Bowl rings and two Super Bowl MVP's. The NFL is on watch, Mahomes is the next great NFL quarterback.

I would feel appalled with myself if I didn't mention Jalen Hurts performance. Now, make no mistake if the Eagles win this game, Hurts is the MVP and he played like one. Hurts went 27 for 38 for 304 passing yards and one touchdown, while rushing for 70 yards and a Super Bowl record three rushing touchdowns. Hurts has a bright future and as a fan of the NFL I hope we see Hurts in another Super Bowl at some point in his career.

The 2022-23 NFL season is officially over but it did not disappoint. Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs on becoming Super Bowl 57 champions. The NFL off season has officially started and the NFL draft is only 73 days away. There may not be any games but there will be storylines.
